Myra Ghattas - Owner, General Manager, Server, Hostess, Cook & Dishwasher
After graduating from Boston University, Myra Ghattas came home to Albuquerque where she was hired as part of the opening team at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque. She continued with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts for fourteen years, working in major cities and holding various food and beverage department positions. In 2003 she resigned as Food and Beverage Director with the Hyatt Regency Burlingame to return home and pursue her dream of opening her own place—Slate Street Café. Her strong work ethic and passion for food and wine were acquired during her years in the restaurant and hospitality industry.
At the Slate Street Café Myra has combined her interest in food and wine with several other industry trends and experiences. “You can have breakfast, lunch or dinner … dine inside or out… downstairs or upstairs… you can have a business meeting at lunch or enjoy a relaxing evening in the wine loft…you can order tater tots from the same menu as sesame crusted Ahi tuna!” She believes in creating a congenial and relaxing atmosphere combined with extraordinary service for her customers. Myra tests every menu item to make sure it is balanced and unique, while following her guidelines of ‘made from scratch’ and using only high quality ingredients.
Myra is also the house sommelier and brings a fresh new approach to wine drinking. “I want to offer wine that is of exceptional quality, but still reasonably priced. I want to take away the intimidation factor in wine selection and simply let people enjoy it.“ She also teaches a community course in wine appreciation aside from her twice monthly wine tastings in the loft. Both are very popular.
Best of all, you can see Myra wearing one of her many ‘hats’ when you visit the Slate Street Café. The community has embraced the Slate Street Café and for an Albuquerque ‘local’ that is a great feeling.
